A General Introduction to Seven-Card Stud PokerPeople are most probably more familiar with the Texas Hold'em poker variant. This is mainly due to its proliferation on TV and in the Internet. However, there are other equally exciting poker variants you could try, like seven-card stud poker. Before Texas Hold'em poker became famous, casinos offer mainly seven-card stud poker games. The complexity of this game both in procedure and possible strategies parallel that of Texas Hold'em. If you have been playing Texas Hold'em for some time now and would like to play a different kind of poker, or if you are new to the world of poker, then it would be beneficial for you to try seven-card stud. Play begins with players being dealt three cards in turn, two of which are face-down, one face-up. Depending on the house rule, the round starts either with the player with the highest upcard or with the lowest upcard. If two players have tied upcard ranks, the suit is used to determine who goes first. Players then bet in turn, usually in a clockwise order. When the first betting round is finished, another face-up card is dealt to all remaining players, in turn. The second betting round begins with the player whose upcards make the best poker hand. A point to be made is that in seven-card stud, poker hands could only be considered if they are complete. Thus, no flushes, straights, or even three and four-of-a-kinds could be counted in determining who goes first in the second betting round, since there are only two upcards. After the second betting round, another face-up card is given to players who remain in hand. This is followed by a third betting round, which starts with the player who has the best upcard poker hand. After the third betting round, a fourth face-up card is dealt to active players, and another betting round follows. If there is still more than one active player after the fourth betting round, a face-down card is dealt, and a last betting round ensues. If more than one player remains in hand, a showdown of hands occurs. In the showdown, players try to create the best possible poker hand out of the seven cards they have. Seven-card stud is an exciting poker variant. Knowing how to play it will give you variety and additional excitement. The possibilities of play and strategies are complex and limitless. Texas Hold'em strategies like bluffing and slow-playing acquire new meaning when used in this variant. This makes seven-card stud a worthy poker variant to play. |
